Changing things up a little bit...

I pray that everyone had a wonderful time with family and friends celebrating our savior's birth. I hope your Christmas was filled with peace and joy, and not too much fruitcake...

Jenny and I are at the Infusion center again today, but we made an important decision regarding treatment options: today's visit to the infusion center will be remarkably short because we have decided to stop the chemotherapy medicine and just have Jenny do a maintenance treatment of avastin.

We spent some time this morning discussing options with Jenny's oncologist, and we all agreed that we would try the avastin only for a few sessions here and then do another MRI later in January or early in February to see if there is any activity.

What this means is that the length and side effects  of the treatments are substantially lessened ( the time in the infusion center should go from 4-5 hours to 1-2 hours) and the side effects should be minimal, so, that is all good.

We had a very nice Christmas, it was nice and quiet with all of the kids at home for a couple of meals.

Thank you all for your continued prayers.

Our best hopes confirmed - The Duke Visit

We have just finished up our visit at the Duke Cancer Center - it is a very impressive facility, with wonderful caring people - a evidence of God's grace. We learned a lot in our conversations with the specialist here at Duke, which has been very helpful. They are a dedicated brain cancer center that has a huge amount of experience with people like Jenny. The really good news is that they don't want to see Jenny back for a while, because she is doing so well and is having clean MRIs. They don't have anything to offer until the tumor starts to grow again, if it does.

We have a clearer understanding of the future treatment options and will have much to talk about when we have the next appointment in Charlotte, we are really looking at the next year, and what options there will be available to us. Overall a very hopeful and positive trip.

Thanks for all your prayers.

Another Clean MRI!

Wonderful news on the MRI! There has been no growth or activity according to the latest scan. We have decided to push the next infusion back a week, so there will be no more infusions before Christmas. We'll make a decision at that point if we should stop the chemo, since the tumor has not shown any new activity, and the maximum amount of time that this particular medicine is tolerated is about 12 months, which we are quickly approaching. What an expression of God's grace that we will be able to enjoy this Christmas together.

Please pray that the results of the consultation with Duke will be clear, and that Jenny will continue to be able to tolerate the Chemo for the last few infusions.

We are so thankful for the time with the family and the lack of advancement of the tumor. Please take the time during this busy time of year to spend a little more time enjoying those around you and spreading God's love...

We'll let you know about the Duke visit next week.

Scheduled for the Duke Consult

We have a consultation scheduled with the Brain Cancer Center at Duke on December the 11th. The first week of December, Jenny has her MRI, treatment, and meeting with our Oncologist here in Charlotte. Then we will go to Duke for an initial consultation, and if there is a possibility of being involved in the Polio Trial, then we'll stay for a second day.

Jenny is back from the cruise, she had a wonderful time!

So, a few things to pray for...

Sunday, November 10, 2013

Believe it or not!

Here is a wonderful example of God's overwhelming grace that we enjoy: this morning, as I am sitting at my kitchen table having a cup of coffee, Jenny is somewhere off the coast of Cuba on a cruise ship! I am rejoicing this morning that God has provided this opportunity for Jenny and am amazed at His kindness that Jenny is doing so well that she is able to spend five days cruising around the Caribbean

As I think about the 13 months since the cancer diagnosis, I would have never imagined that on Novemeber 10, 2013, Jenny would be able to enjoy such an adventure. Just another example of the overwhelming goodness of the God that we serve, where His blessings overflow the cup that we ask to be filled...

Isn't He good?

The next MRI is scheduled for December 5th, The paperwork has been completed and submitted for the Duke trial, we are just waiting on the pathology slides to be send over for their review. If all goes well, we are going to try and schedule a consultation visit the second week in December, so we can have one less MRI to do...

Thank you all for your prayers and support!

Great News - Another Clean MRI

Just got back from the Doctor's appointment, and the MRI did not show any sign of growth! So another great report. We will continue to get additional information on the trials being run at Duke, but we have some additional time to learn more.

Thanks so much for your prayers and support, God continues to provide us the grace we require daily and we are rejoicing in Him!

Meeting Tomorrow - We would appreciate your prayers

Jenny had an MRI done today, we go in tomorrow to view the results. We are also going to talk about the potential of Jenny enrolling in a trial the is currently underway at Duke Medical Center. The trial involves injecting the Polio virus into the tumor. It has shown some degree of promise in the very limited number of patients that have received the treatment. Please pray that we have clarity about pursuing this treatment. I will publish an update tomorrow with the results of the MRI...

Thanks!

Another one in the books!

Jenny's parent were here for the last couple of days, loving on Jenny as only parents can. Dad took Jenny down to the infusion center and then spent the hours there talking about current events and general philosophies on life. Jenny's Mom in the mean time was tearing up the kitchen - whipping up a batch of rolls, Crackers, Blueberry cobbler, and orzo, among other wonderful treats.

The treatment was about the same, but the aftereffects seem to be not as bad, so we are very thankful. The next MRI is scheduled for the 9th, and then the next consultation and infusion is the 10th.

Jenny has been experiencing a little vertigo in the morning when she first wakes up, so if you would please remember to keep her in you prayers for this specifically. Joe had his adenoids removed this morning, so, it was a very heavy health care week for the Mulligans. Thank you all for your prayers and support!

No News is Good News

Sorry that I have not been on the blog for a while. There is nothing new to share, which is really good news! Jenny continues to receive infusions every 2 weeks, with a doctor consultation every 4 weeks and an MRI every 8 weeks. She finished her last infusion/doctor appointment this last Thursday, and there was no news, just the standard stuff....

The next MRI will be in 4 weeks, so sometimes around October 10th. I'll let you know if anything happens between now and then, but that should be the next check in point...

Thanks for your continued prayer and support!

Good News on the MRI - 8/15

Good News - The MRI showed that they was no change, no new growth, which is the goal of the treatment. Thanks to the Lord! We so appreciate all of your prayers and support. The next MRI will be in two months, with treatments every other week between now and then.

We just finished the Doctor's appointment and now are in the infusion center getting a treatment. Joe started his first day of school, we dropped him off at 6:55am this morning for the car pool with a great group of parents that have blessed us by driving Joe back and forth, what a provision of grace for us.

Please pray that Joe makes some great friends, is excited about his classes, and makes the transition smoothly.

Ethan, Tim, and Grace start their classes at UNCC next week, so we have a lot going on around the Mulligan house.

Post Treatment Trip to the Mountains

Jenny finished her treatment on Thursday this week and then she and I ran up to the mountains to escape the August heat in Charlotte. The fact that she was able to make the trip is a testimony of God's grace on us! Below is a cheesy tourist picture of us in Blowing Rock where is was 15 degrees cooler then down here in the low lands.

Jenny has her next MRI on the 14th and then a follow-up appointment on the 15th. We'll let you know how everything looks. Thanks as always for your prayers and support!

Treatment Update

Jenny and I went in for her treatment this week and met with the oncologist. He was very pleased with how well Jenny is tolerating the treatments, they seem to have been able to dial in a cocktail of various medicines, chemo, and steroids that is able to do the necessary work and not make Jenny too sick in the process.

This week, following the treatment, Jenny was able to sleep well and had a pretty good level of energy, which was very encouraging. Joe, Jenny and I celebrated by cooking a big slab of baby back ribs on the grill! (yum!). I am traveling the majority of this week, so Jenny and Joe are at the Beach with Maria and her family (thanks Maria and Jim!)

The next treatment is scheduled for Aug 1st (following our every two week schedule), and then the next MRI will be on the 14th, with a treatment and review of the MRI on the 15th., which is also Joe's first day of school at Covenant Classical. Later that week, Maria's oldest Son is getting married, so it will be an adventure filled week!

Thank you for your continued prayers for us and our family, we so feel your support.

saying good bye to grandma grace

Jenny had to move her scheduled treatment to today, instead of going in Friday, as originally scheduled, due to my Grandmother Grace passing away this week. So, we are traveling this weekend to Birmingham Alabama. Grandma was a remarkable woman of 98 1/2 years of age. Up until very recently she was living in her house, driving her car, and "taking care of the elderly" in her church family. I had the opportunity to visit her a couple of times over the last year and she told me each time that I would come to see her and we would go out to dinner together - "Raymond", she would say with a very southern/Italian accent, "I am not sure why the good Lord still has me on this earth, but if it is only to pray for my children, grand children, and great grandchildren every day, then that's enough for me." Our conversations would range from college football, to the direction interest rates were headed, to the latest speech that the president had given, to sports center...
It was certainly an opportunity to experience God's grace with I saw the legacy of a family history of life centered around a church family, and an undivided trust in the Lord's willingness to hear  and answer our prayers.
Please pray for us as we travel to Alabama tomorrow, a day after Jenny's treatment, that she would be able to travel comfortably and feel strong enough to manage the requirements of the services on Friday.

3,000 Miles Completed!

Maria's completion of the Race Across America is completed. Not only did Maria finish, but she won the Woman's division and numerous other awards and honors including best rookie rider. She, and her story, is making an impact, on all that hear it. The following is an article that was published as part of the race coverage that does a great job of capturing the depth of Maria's commitment to the cause of raising support and awareness for Brain Cancer research.

Maria's Amazing Testimony

Thank you all for your continued prayer and support. Jenny has felt much better following this week's treatment, there has been some low grade nausea, and some tiredness, but much better than the last two treatments! God's grace poured out on us again...

MRI Update - Good News!

The MRI came back unchanged from the last one that was done, so that is good news - no new growth to be seen! They are adding an additional anti - nausea drug to the chemo cocktail today, so we are hopeful that it will be effective.

Thank you all fro your prayers and support. Go Maria Go! 2,230 miles down! Only 765 to go! Unbelievable. You can follow maria in real time here, she is racer 462.

Overcoming hardship - Maria's Example

For those that have been praying for Jenny's sister Maria in her bike race across america, here is a great summary of what has transpired in the race, after the crew's car was run into by another car and their spare bikes and equipment (along with the van itself) were all totaled. It has been such an inspiration to watch Maria's determination, perseverance, and  stamina and she refuses to give up, even in the face of these trials. Following Maria. An unbelievable testimony to Maria's dedication to the cause, she is now over 66% of the way across the country and in first place for all women!

Tomorrow Jenny and I will be going in to get the results of the MRI that was performed on Monday as well as have another chemo infusion. Please continue to pray for Jenny's reaction to the chemo, that her nausea will be minimized and that she will feel strong following the treatments.

We are observing God's grace this week as we celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in Savannah Ga, enjoying recounting the grace that has been provided through our marriage and family.

Big Day Today! 3000 Miles to the Cure - mile 1...

Today Maria starts her trek across america. What an amazing feat of bravery, endurance, and dedication. There are a number of ways that you can follow along and be involved. There is a page that will help you locate where maria is each day at Where is Maria. There is also a facebook page where you can sign-up to pray for Maria each day and keep updated on specific prayer requests at Pray for Maria. There will also be a blog that you can follow at the facebook site or you can signup for email updates at Email Updates. This is a picture of one of the support vehicles that a local supporter provided the super cool skin for the team.

Jenny Update: The latest treatment this week was not without it's difficulties. The port that is used to draw blood and to deliver the chemo was blocked, so there was a three hour delay in getting the infusion completed on Thursday. There was also some nausea on Friday, which we had hoped to avoid. Jenny is feeling better today and is looking forward to our 25th wedding anniversary trip to Savannah next week.

Prior to heading to our little get away, Jenny will go in for an MRI on Monday the 17th to get up-to-date images. We will be coming back for an appointment on the 20th to view the MRI results and have the next chemo treatment.

Please continue to pray for continued strength, healing, and encouragement for Jenny and for Maria's safety, protection, and endurance. Thanks for being in this with us!

Sorry that I have been away...

Sorry for the big gap in posts. Here is the update: We spent last week at Hilton Head as a family and had a great time with wonderful weather and a very relaxing time! It is truly a expression of God's grace to be sitting by the ocean, with the family all around and Jenny feeling well.  Because of the vacation, Jenny got to skip a week of Chemo, which was a great break. This week, I had to go out of town for a couple of days and Jenny's sister. Maria was here to take her to the infusion center.

After that infusion as well as the last dose a few weeks ago, Jenny was hit with some pretty strong nausea, which had not happened with any of the previous sessions. So, please pray that her system would allow the chemo to work without making her get sick.
We just finished cleaning-up from Grace's (our daughter) high school graduation party, where we had about 50 of her friends over for Jones Soda, Pizza, and Homemade Pies. It was a wonderful time of sharing how Grace's friendship has impacted those around her, and sharing in this rite of passage. The picture below is Jenny with some of her girl friends at the party:
Jenny and Her Girl Friends (Jenny 3rd from right)
Maria is getting ready for the cross country bike race and was out training this morning right after the sun came up. Continue to pray for her as she prepared for this massive undertaking - there has been a facebook page set-up for those that want to pray for Maria as she rides - https://www.facebook.com/groups/371043566340255/ so that you can stay involved the whole way across america.

Everything is going well!

Jenny went in for another round of Chemo yesterday, and everything is going well. I was out in the mid-west traveling on business, so Jenny 's parents were here, and they took her over to the appointment, which was very much an evidence of God's grace for us. Another kindness that we experienced this week was having out dear friend of over 25 year, Bob Kauflin be able to stop by and visit with Jenny, it was a very encouraging time.

We hear from Charlie and TIm as they are working their way back across the country, they are catching up with some of our Paparella and Troncale cousins in Pennslyvania for the last couple of days, ending up in Washington DC with the a huge event to support the

2013 Race For Hope - DC 5k Run/Walk - Sunday, May 5 - Washington, DC

We are looking forward to having them back...

Thanks for all  of your care and concern. Finals week for all of the mulligan scholars next week and then it is off to Hilton Head for a family vacation!

Really Good News on Today's MRI

So we got a look at the first MRI since Jenny started the new Chemo + Avastin and everything looks really good. We contrasted it to what things looked like after the first month of just Temador, and there was a great deal of improvement. The activity around the tumor was greatly diminished and the swelling that is caused by that activity was reduced substantially. So, this is great news, and really the best for which we could have hoped. The dosage of Chemo is actually going to be reduced a little to see if the side effects (mostly fatigue) can be reduced, while still enjoying the full benefits of it's impact on the tumor.

What this means for Jenny is that the impact of the swelling and tumor activity, which include a diminished memory and increased apathy will continue to be manageable as long as this combination of medicines continue to be effective.

God's grace continues to be showered upon us as the new medicines seem to be doing their job. Thank you for all of your prayers and support! Much to be thankful for!

Oh Happy Day!

It is a catchy little song that we sing at the Sunday service - "oh happy day". As we go through today, the day that we celebrate Jesus' victory over sin, death, and the plans of the enemy, I want to remember that 2000 some years ago, God changed history forever. History to us - to Him, a sovereign plan...Yesterday, today, and forever - the difference is monumental to us, but to Him... the act of His son on the cross is as effective today - for the trials, difficulties, and temptations, as it is to whatever tomorrow will bring, and is comprehensive for anything in our past causes us question His love for us.
Today we celebrate the complete work of our Savior, who died, rose, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, providing provision for our past, present, and future... Oh Happy Day!

God's Faithfulness

Today was the third visit to the Infusion center to get another round of the cancer fighting cocktail. Today's visit was much shorter than the last two, for which we were very thankful - a small grace of God, which we enjoyed.

We have been covering Genesis in the Sunday morning messages, we just finished chapter 17 and the first half of 18. It starts with God declaring himself Almighty (17:1) , showing that he is able to uphold is promises to Abram and ends with Him proclaiming "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" (18:14)

It is not a wonderful provision of the Lord to know that his promises are sure, because His ability is without bounds? We continue to see his faithfulness everyday, in his work in our lives, in our family, and in our community. Regardless of the trails that we face, his love endures forever! It is not a complicated truth, Lord, help us simply trust you...

Five Months In...

Today Jenny spent another four hours in the Infusion Center today. She has done really well handling the new chemo and avastin, for which we can be very thankful. Please pray that she continues to progress and gains energy in the coming weeks. Her blood test showed that her body is holding up well.

The next MRI is scheduled for April 21st, which will be after the third IV chemo treatment, we are hopeful that that MRI will show a reduction in the size of the tumor, or at least that it has not increased in size.

I was looking back at the first post on this blog, which was October 2nd, 2012 - only 5 months ago, so much has changed in our lives, we know about things of which we would have preferred to remain ignorant, we have also experienced a totally unbelievable outpouring of God's grace, mainly through those that God has put around us. Your support, prayers, and constant care sustains us and gives us a picture of the body of Christ, with all parts working together to bring glory to his name.

We sang "Great is Thy Faithfulness" last Sunday, and they words have never been more true for us:

Great is Thy faithfulness,” O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

“Great is Thy faithfulness!” “Great is Thy faithfulness!“
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
“Great is Thy faithfulness,” Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

Amen!

Post Infusion Report

Jenny is doing well handling the new chemo + Avastin. She is ramping down her steroids, which reduce the swelling, which we have found she is very sensitive to, so we have to monitor that closely. There have been no major side-effects of the new treatment, just some minor stomach upset and a little up-tick in fatigue, so that's wonderful.

The next treatment is next week (3/7), so we are hoping for a quiet few days here. Really nice visit with Jenny's Parents and my Dad, and the boys are doing a great job of taking time out of their busy schedules to spend time at home, which Jenny really enjoys.

Thank you all so much for your continued prayer and support.

Today at the Infusion Center

Today is the first infusion (medicine given by IV) for Jenny. The infusion center is kind of unbelievable (see picture below). The staff here have a real kindness and compassion about them, and every effort is made to make the treatments as comfortable as they can be. Because this is the first treatment, they have to give the medicine at a very slow rate to be able to determine if there are any reactions to any of the new stuff, so we will be here for about 4 hours today.

The activity room at the infusion center, looking out towards the wellness garden...

God has been providing grace for each step along the way, please pray that the Chemo (CPT-11) and Avastin work the way that they should, with minimal side effects . We have Jenny's parents here, and my Dad has re-arranged his travel plans to be able to spend the night with us. So, this morning while we are at the infusion center, Joe (our 13 year old) and Jenny's mom are making a huge pot of spaghetti sauce and meatballs for a family dinner tonight - which might be better for the soul than anything that modern medicine has come up with....

2/13 MRI Follow-up Results

We just got back from the last update with the oncologist, looking at the last MRI, taken on Monday, it seems that the pill based chemotherapy was not being very effective. It was clear that the tumor has started to grow again. Clearly, this is not the news that we were hoping for, but we were not terribly surprised based on Jenny's energy level over the last week or so.

The next treatment option is the IV chemotherapy,  so starting on the 21st we will start the IV visits every two weeks.

This down-side of this new treatment are potentially more side effects and more time spent in hospitals, since each IV visit is roughly 3 hours long.

Please pray that Jenny continues to experience God's Grace through this time of transition and change (which is not her favorite thing). One observation of God's Grace that we experienced today was a very kind nurse that shared with us her faith in God's healing power and sustaining grace, which was very encouraging and timely.

Thank you all for your continued care and concern.

Back from Mexico, Busy Week Ahead

This was the view of the beach in Mexico!
We had a wonderful time, it was very relaxing and a nice time together away from the cares of the world. This week is a busy one for Jenny. Tomorrow morning (2/11) we go in for an MRI in the morning. The doctors are hoping that this will provide a clearer picture of what is going on than the last one, since the last pictures were a little cloudy - due to the impact of the radiation treatments. On Wednesday (2/13) we will go in to get the results and discuss any changes in the MRI from last month. I'll let you know what we find out. Thanks for your continued care and concern!

MRI Results

We spent about an hour with the Oncologist today and reviewed the MRI Results. The short version is that the results are what was expected. The tumor does not look like it has increased in size, nor were there any new growth anywhere else in Jenny's brain, so the radiation and the chemotherapy did it's job! The blood tests came back will all of the numbers being right where they need to be, so that is all good news.

We all agreed that overall Jenny is doing great and is generally lacking any symptoms that would indicate that the tumor is impacting her like it was before the surgery and the 1st round of treatments. We had a lengthy discussion regarding potential progression courses and treatment options, none of which we'll need to worry about over the next month. Jenny's sister's perspective is that she can she increases in Jenny's energy level, activity level, and overall increases in "Jennyness" each time she is here.

They ordered the next batch of Chemo pills, and when they are delivered, we will start a 5 day on - 23 day off cycle, at the end of which Jenny will have another MRI and we'll see a clearer picture of what is going on in there...

Jenny and I are going to take this opportunity, when the doctor visits are few and the energy level is high, to get away on vacation for a week on the sunny beaches of Mexico, so in a couple of weeks off we go! I'll try and post some pictures....

Thank you all for your continued prayer support and care!

MRI Update

Jenny had her "post-treatment" MRI today, we go in for the consultation tomorrow. The MRI itself went really well and Jenny, although a little apprehensive going in - since she does care much for confined spaces, did great. As an added benefit, the Starbucks Grande Soy Latte that we purchased prior to the MRI was the perfect temp for Jenny to consume by the time the MRI as completed. I will give further details on the MRI tells us tomorrow, after the consultation appointments.

Thank you all for your prayers, God's grace was readily observable today!

Looking Forward to 2013

We have had a wonderful Holiday season here at the Mulligan house. We just sent off my Mom and Stepfather, who we here for a very enjoyable couple of days. Jenny's parents are stopping by on their way to Florida this week, we look forward to seeing them again. We have had the opportunity to spend time together as a family as school was on break and even our children that are working retail had a few days off. We are all really enjoying Jenny's vacation from treatments and doctor visits!

The end of the calendar year always gives opportunity for reflection, so here are a few of our thoughts at the transition point from 2012 to 2013:

  • God provides grace for us each day and provides us hope and mercies never ending. We do not know what 2013 will bring, but what we do know, just as the writer of Lamentations said, in the midst of trials and tribulation:
But this I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.”
        (Lamentations 3:21-24 ESV)

It is not hard or difficult to call to mind all of the ways that God has shown us His steadfast love, even with the reality of a brain tumor, we have seen hundreds of ways that God has used this circumstance to bring us closer to Him, remind us of the eternal, and help us focus on loving one another, allowing us to let the less important things go.

  • No matter what happens in 2013, our greatest need has been taken care of, making everything else of a lesser importance. There are no concerns or worries that cause us to fear the future.
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? ...And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? ...But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? ...But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:25-34 ESV)

Seeking the Kingdom of God can look a lot of different ways, as each of us have been given a unique part to play, with specific gifts and skills which we have been given. My prayer is that in 2013, we have much less anxiety and much more kingdom seeking...

When we are able to place our trust in the provision of God's son's death for our sins, by His grace, we really have nothing else to be anxious about, our eternal destination has been secured, and we can be free to focus on fulfilling our calling, unencumbered by temporal concerns.

Jenny has her "post-treatment" MRI on 1/15, then we do the consultation on 1/16, until then we have no doctor visits or treatment. Jenny is taking a nap every afternoon, but other than that, life it pretty normal around here.

Thank you for all of your prayers, cards, emails, and calls. I could not imagine walking this road without you! Your kindnesses have allowed us to experience a small taste of the Kingdom of God here on earth. Happy New Years!
